Living like the Ashleys

Updated: Oct 20, 2022

I was lucky enough to review the Llangoed Hall, former home of Sir Bernard Ashley and his wife, Laura Ashley, whose impressive collection of fine art and personal photography still lines the walls. These personal touches, coupled with the incredibly attentive staff and an exceptional menu made this the most luxurious mini-break of my life. If you’re partial to fantasies about being part of the aristocracy in a by-gone era, this is the place for you.

The downstairs powder room was lined with vintage Laura Ashley shots like this one that had me lusting after my mum’s long gone 80s/90s wardrobe

When I was six, I won a 'design a pattern' children's competition that Laura Ashley ran. The prize was that they'd create a dress fabric using your drawing, and they gifted me with a dress and matching headband inspired by my doodles. I remember being thrilled, but a little disappointed that they edited out the parrot I included in my original (on reflection it was probably a bit garish)!

I was 32, not 6 when I created this pattern design!
