What do Lobsters and Honeybees have in common?

I’ve written for Modern Salt about the complex challenges of creating sustainable livelihood programmes in a developing country.

Working as an International Beekeeping Specialist for SEED Madagascar, my project seeks to create sustainable livelihoods from beekeeping. Madagascar is globally renowned for its rich biodiversity, but climate change and daily survival needs surpass conservation priorities.

Beekeeping provides a unique opportunity to generate incomes for inhabitants, whilst supporting the ever-dwindling endemic rainforest, 75% of which is dependent on insect pollination for its survival. In Madagascar, the survival of threatened communities, animals, flora and fauna can all be directly supported by honeybees. But  the practical and philosophical complexities of challenging the way that people harvest their natural resources in one of the world’s least developed countries cannot be over estimated.
